HEAT PUMPS TECHNOLOGY
These days, the most efficient air conditioning systems use heat pump technology. They provide many benefits both for the consumer and for the environment.
WHAT ARE HEAT PUMPS?
Heat pumps are energy-efficient and space saving. They can both heat and cool buildings, unlike traditional radiators or air conditioning systems. Most heat pumps work in the same way as a fridge does.
HOW EFFICIENT ARE THEY?
Heat pumps can be very efficient. They can achieve efficiencies of between 300% and 500%. This is usually expressed in product literature as a ‘Coefficient of Performance’ (COP for short). 300% is given as a COP of 3 to 1 and 500% as 5 to 1.
HOW DOES THIS EFFICIENCY IMPACT ON THE COST?
As a capital investment, heat pump air conditioning systems generally cost more than traditional heating or cooling systems. But their superior energy efficiency rating means that they are accorded considerable tax breaks by the UK government. Once the system is installed, the investment is soon recouped through reduced running costs. And don’t forget that, because they both heat and cool an environment, only one system is used, rather than two.
IS HEAT PUMP TECHNOLOGY BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
Yes. Heat pump units emit considerably less CO2 than gas or oil fired heating or cooling systems. Indeed, since they create a source of heat as a by-product of the cooling process, they are considered a renewable energy source.
